Blog Assignment 8 - Persuaders

"The Persuaders" program explores the idea that Americans are seeking and finding a sort of identity in buying/joining a brand. What is this about?

An example of this would be when barriers are created that separate technology and the personal touch of products which many consumers long for. Many consumers feel separated by a technology barrier because of all the various ways to communicate informally. By creating a commercial that shows impractical family values, you may attract several people who long for those same values being presented.

What are the common elements in the persuasion/selling strategies of advertising and marketing?

Common elements would be to focus ads on a specific group of people. You can see this in several instances in the real world. As we learned before, the most unrepresented group of people are women over 40. In the video, Song targets this group with focusing their entire product on them. Another instance would be the iPod commercials. These commercials show you how you can belong to a certain group. They use cult like strategies to create these type of commercials.

Where are we headed? What are your thoughts on how far the techniques of persuasion might go?

I feel that we are headed in a totally new and awesome direction. Our technology is more advanced than ever which can create new ways of targeting only the audiences intended. This may cause us to save more money by not wasting our ad dollars in unneeded places. I feel that these ad techniques will go on and change constantly to adjust to a changing society. Every year their will be a new trend or style and each ad will have to adjust to keep the product alive.
